Study Offers New Insight for Causes and Treatment of Unexplained Male Infertility

Research demonstrated that oral antioxidant supplementation by men with idiopathic infertility using Fairhaven Health’s FH PRO for Men caused an upregulation of 274 of the 379 proteins beneficial to sperm health.

In the simplest terms, the study revealed for the first time that antioxidant supplementation supports sperm function at the molecular level.

Several studies have found that antioxidant supplementation can boost sperm health in infertile men. A new study led by Cleveland Clinic digs deeper to shed light on exactly how antioxidants improve sperm health, and why antioxidant supplements should be recommended to men with idiopathic (unexplained) infertility.

Ashok Agarwal, Ph.D., director of the American Center for Reproductive Medicine at Cleveland Clinic, led a research team exploring the molecular impact of oral antioxidant supplements. Specifically, they sought to understand whether antioxidants influence the expression of proteins that are important for sperm health. The team evaluated the sperm protein profile of men with idiopathic infertility before and after supplementation with FH PRO For Men. The study lasted six months.

Presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology annual meeting in Vienna, Austria in June, 2019, the study revealed that 274 of the 379 differentially expressed proteins associated with normal sperm function were upregulated – an increase in cellular response – following supplementation with FH PRO for Men for six months. This is the first study of its kind demonstrating the positive change in the sperm proteome of men with idiopathic infertility after oral antioxidant therapy.

“In sperm, different proteins are in charge of both normal and abnormal sperm functions,” Agarwal, said. “In the simplest terms, the study revealed for the first time that antioxidant supplementation supports sperm function at the molecular level, particularly proteins involved in mitochondrial function and oxidation, by influencing the expression of key proteins vital to sperm health.”

In addition to these promising results, a separate study was recently conducted in the Department of Urology at Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha, Qatar. In the study, 148 men diagnosed with infertility took FH PRO for Men for a period of three months, resulting in statistically and biologically significant improvements in all key sperm health parameters (count, motility and morphology) and a significant reduction in harmful levels of oxidants and DNA fragmentation, which included an increase in progressive motility by 102%.

FH PRO for Men is a patented non-prescription antioxidant-based supplement that includes ingredients well-studied for their role in supporting male fertility, including L-carnitine, CoQ10, Vitamin E, Lycopene, N-Acetyl-l-Cysteine, and Zinc – over 25 ingredients in total. FH PRO is manufactured in the United States in a GMP-certified facility and is part of the Fairhaven Health family of fertility supplements, a company that has been the industry leader in this space for nearly two decades.
