Study Shows Laparoscopic Surgery Leads to Fewer Complications for Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment
St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) January 23, 2014 -- Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) that allows doctors to diagnose conditions and perform a number of surgical procedures without the need for a large surgical incision. The result is less pain and scarring, less blood loss, fewer infections, and faster recovery times when compared to traditional surgeries. Now, a study conducted by researchers at Hospices Civils de Lyon in France suggests that patients with peritoneal cancers such as mesothelioma can benefit from laparoscopic surgery as well.
The patients treated by a laparoscopic approach were compared to eight patients treated by laparotomy (traditional full-size incision). According to the study titled “Postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic vs open cytoreductive surgery plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for treatment of peritoneal surface malignancies” that was published in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO) on October 16, 2013 on the Science Direct website, the laparoscopy patients experienced fewer complications and spent an average of a week less in the hospital than patients who had traditional surgery.
“Undergoing treatment for mesothelioma cancer is a long and difficult process. If laparoscopic surgery can be performed instead of a traditional surgery, hospital and recovery time can be reduced,” Neil Maune, partner at MRHFM. “This is one of many positive steps in the right direction towards developing more minimally invasive, yet effective treatment options for mesothelioma.”
Researchers concluded that “Laparoscopic CRS combined with HIPEC is feasible and safe for curative treatment of strictly selected patients with peritoneal surface malignancy and might reduce postoperative complications and length of hospital stay.” If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, talk to your doctor about minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic surgery and learn about other treatment options at http://www.mesotheliomabook.com.
