The interesting choice to paint on vinyl was born out of necessity. When starting out, Redideo didn't have the cash for unlimited canvases to experiment on but he did have a ton of old records lying around. It turned out that the round recycled canvas gave each piece a more interesting look and what started out as an experiment became part of his classic signature. He also found the idea of upcycling old records and giving them a new purpose so they didn't end up in a landfill to be very purposeful and motivating.
Starting with fluid painting but also branching out to other styles, Redideo covers 12" vinyl records with a mixture of acrylic paint and mixed medium to create his finished pieces. One of the most challenging and rewarding parts of this type of painting is learning how to control the behavior of the paint using different techniques and paint recipes in order to create colorful abstract images that resemble things found in the natural world.
The finished piece is dried and then coated with clear epoxy resin for a glossy shine. The last step is to frame the artwork and what would make a better framing style than to mimic that of a platinum record you might find hanging in a music producer's office?
