LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 31, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- High school students will have the unique opportunity of learning how to cook for astronauts through a summer camp partnership between Sullivan University and NASA.
Sullivan University's renowned College of Hospitality Studies Culinary Arts Program has teamed up with NASA's HUNCH program to offer a summer camp that will prepare students for the NASA HUNCH Culinary Competition, which gives students the opportunity to make the meals that will be served to astronauts on the International Space Station.
"If you're passionate about food and the science behind it, and want an experience that is out of this world, then this camp is for you," said Nina Martinez, Sullivan University's Vice President of Enrollment Management. "Students can also learn how their schools can participate in the NASA HUNCH Culinary Challenge."
Each year, the National HUNCH Culinary Challenge sends the food prepared by one high school to the International Space Station. Chefs and instructors from Sullivan's culinary program have judged the competition in the past.
"NASA Hunch Camp is a camp experience that definitely is out of this world," said Sullivan Chef Representative, Chef Dom Tardy, who has judged and helps coordinate the competition. "It has been a great collaboration of NASA Engineers and classically trained chef creating a culinary training like no other out there. Each camp day pushes the limits in food science training, and challenges students to blast the limits in space food production to another level."
"With the NASA Hunch Culinary Camp, we want to fully prepare students to learn about the Hunch competition as well as challenge them," Chef Dom said.
While at camp, students will experience what college life looks like. They'll stay at our Gardiner Point dormitory, use the shuttle to campus, walk the same halls, and work in the same classrooms with our instructors.
"Student campers are truly immersed in the college experience," Martinez said.
The NASA HUNCH Challenge Culinary camp is scheduled for June 12 to 17; open to upcoming sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduating seniors.
