Junior Statesmen Summer School Speakers Program Culminates in a Session on the House Floor
Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- On July 30th, over 200 students from the Junior State of America (JSA) Summer Schools at Georgetown and the University of Virginia visited the floor of the House of Representatives. The students were hosted on the floor by Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) who spoke to the students along with Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC). Later that day, the students heard from a variety of other speakers including Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and former attorney general Ed Meese of the Reagan Administration. Their visit this week was the culmination of a month of exciting and educational speakers programs at all JSA summer Schools.
The students JSA’s program at Stanford University had the opportunity on July 15th to visit the Google Headquarters in Mountain View, California. There, they toured the campus and heard from Google staff members about different aspects of the company. Among that day's speakers were JSA Alumna and Principal of corporate development Maria Shim.
The JSA Summer School Princeton on July 18th attended a briefing at the United Nations focused on international politics. Among the speakers were Dr. Randy Rydell, Senior Political Affairs Officer in the Office of the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs. The students also heard from Willie Nunn, the Federal Coordinating Officer at FEMA.
The gravity of being on the house floor, a place most students have only seen on television, was not lost on the students. "There were a lot of great speakers to begin with, but the whole experience was amplified by being on the House floor," said Ohio student Governor Winston Underwood.
JSA Summer Programs are ongoing at Georgetown University, UCLA and will begin next week at Princeton University.
