Summer Heat Causes Rise in Diaper Rash for Babies; Swabbies Provides Effective Solution

Summertime is a popular travel season for families with small children, meaning higher rates of heat-related diaper rash and more sticky diaper changes on the road. Swabbies’ patented single-hand applicator was designed to distribute organic diaper rash cream for quick relief.

Carman Campbell, CEO of Swabbies, discusses the importance of taking greater precautions when traveling with infants during the summer.

“Trying to hold a baby on a makeshift changing table while fumbling for supplies in a diaper bag and getting diaper rash cream all over your hands can quickly turn into a traveling inconvenience,” states Campbell. “Being prepared makes frequent diaper changes less stressful for babies and parents.”

Nearly 80% of parents confirm that their babies experience skin irritation during summertime’s warmer weather.1 Heat rash is the most common affliction with a reported incidence of 48%, followed by diaper rash at 29% and general skin irritations at 22%.1 The likelihood of having to deal with these issues is higher for vacationing families, especially when visiting the beach, water parks or swimming pools, because salt water and chlorine can wreak havoc on a baby’s skin. Carman Campbell, CEO of Swabbies Technology, Inc., says protecting a baby’s skin can be challenging logistically during summertime travel—but the vital task is made easy and more sanitary with a one-handed disposable applicator.

Summer’s hot, humid weather fuels the development of diaper rash in babies, primarily due to excess moisture that can’t escape diapers which are designed to lock in moisture—never allowing the baby’s skin to dry out. Infants are more likely to develop yeast diaper rashes, which manifest as a wet, red rash, and can spread quickly in the summer heat.2 In addition to the risks presented by rashes, contamination and infections are also worrisome factors for traveling families who may resort to changing a baby’s diaper at the beach or near a swimming pool, which could lead to water contamination.

Per Campbell, parents need to take greater precautions during summertime, such as frequently checking diapers in a diaper-changing area away from the water and changing a baby’s diaper as soon as they get out of the pool or from playing at the beach. “Keeping the diaper area clean and dry is essential to preventing diaper rash and other skin irritations,” states Campbell. Campbell offers several tips for families traveling with infants:

  • Rinse off chlorine, salt water and beach sand as soon as the baby is out of the pool or ocean. Thoroughly dry the diaper area.
  • Apply a quick-acting diaper rash cream to form a barrier. The faster diaper rash is treated, the quicker the baby will feel relief, and the lower the probability the rash will spread or cause the baby more discomfort.
  • If traveling by plane, be prepared with a changing pad, plenty of diapers and wipes, and mess-free diaper rash cream to make diaper changes easier, especially in germy locations such as airplane bathrooms.

As a mom of three young children, Campbell was desperately seeking a product that allowed her to have a free hand and a clean hand when attempting to treat diaper rash while changing a squirming baby’s diaper. Out of that necessity, the idea for Swabbies was born. From there, Campbell became a mompreneur with a mission to create safe, beneficial and effective baby care products that are easier and safer for busy parents and caregivers.
