DIALECTICAL BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (DBT) AS A TREATMENT OPTION
Here is background on this release. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was developed by an American Psychologist, Marsha M. Linehan, and incorporates strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Zen Principles, and Behavioral Sciences (Austin & Boyd, 2015). At Sunshine Coast Health Centre, the focus is to help clients achieve general skills by employing two treatment modes delivered by multidisciplinary clinicians: skills training and post-session coaching. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the selected skills, flexibility has been built into the program to allow focus on the clients’ individual needs. At any time, skills can be added or dropped from the program based on a partnered approach, clinician recommendation, and client feedback. The skills group meets once weekly for a 2-hour skills training workshop. Three weekly 1-hour coaching follow-ups are scheduled afterwards to assess understanding and review further questions or concerns related to the selected skill. Further individual treatment is facilitated through the collaboration of the psychiatrist, other supporting practitioners, and the client’s primary counsellor. The overall goal is to provide clients with the general tools needed to help them identify and make changes to thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that cause them distress in their everyday lives.
