Surwon Technology: Graphene Production Costs Must Fall
Surwon Technology says that the cost of producing graphene must fall further if the super-material is to live up to its hype.
HONG KONG, May 29, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hong Kong-based advanced materials innovator, Surwon Technology says it believes that the cost of producing graphene must continue to fall if use of the material is ever to become commonplace outside the niche applications it is making inroads into at present.
Revealed to the world over 15 years ago, graphene was touted as revolutionary space-age material that would have a dramatic impact on a range of areas and technologies including computing, fuel efficiency, electrical conductivity, aviation and filtration among a host of others, but, to date, it has yet to live up to its billing.
One of the challenges facing the proliferation and broader uptake of graphene is, according to Bo Kung, Chief Technology Officer at Surwon Technology, the fact that it is still prohibitively expensive to produce in usable quantities.
"Certainly, in its purest form, it represents a major cost hurdle for many commercial users to negotiate," he opined.
"In the past, we found ways to reduce the cost in some applications because we were producing a variant that offered an acceptable compromise in terms of performance and cost of production but, ultimately, the applications for which we produced those variants didn't require graphene in its highest-grade form," he added.
Surwon Technology has recently mothballed two highly-promising projects - a graphene-infused rubber compound for a road car tire and a graphene-reinforced concrete compound – both on high-cost grounds.
"It's inevitable that the cost of production will fall eventually, but how quickly mankind progresses technologically depends to a great extent on how quickly we can overcome the limitations of the materials we have to work with," said Mr. Kung.
