Symbolics.com turns 30 - European Domain Centre Publishes Definitive Domain Endings Guide
Copenhagen, Denmark (PRWEB) March 14, 2015 -- “It was easy when only .com was around in 1985, however in 2014 alone 420 new domain endings were launched,” said Christopher Hofman Laursen, the CEO of European Domain Centre. “Businesses which want to protect their brand name online have a hard time understanding what's available. This means that they are very late at securing their domain names and could be missing out. We therefore spent +50 hours to come up with a visual map, which puts everything in order.”
Laursen noted that this Sunday is the 30th birthday of the world's oldest domain name, symbolics.com. In recent years, there has been an explosion in extensions. In 2012, ICANN decided to make new domain endings possible. From 1985 to 2013, there were 258 extensions launched. These included generic endings such as .com and country code endings such as .co.uk, .de, .cn, etc. In 2014, there came 420 new domain endings such as .guru, .marketing and .london. In 2015, it is expected that hundreds more will follow, including “dot-brand” extensions such as .bmw.
European Domain Centre, which offers all 800+ top level domains, published the guide to help corporations regarding what's available and what to go after to protect their brands. Many businesses have decided to play a waiting game to see which ones will win and which will fail. “There is a risk of losing out, however,” said Laursen.
