WICHITA, Kan., Dec. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Parable of a True Knight: Chronicles of the Knights Errant by TJ Pohlman tells of the life-changing adventures of Benjamin Knight, a young boy who one day wants to become a real knight. A jousting tournament was scheduled to happen in the town fairgrounds, and Benjamin meets Joshua, a young man who helps promote the event by hanging flyers. From then on, the boy must learn that being a true knight requires the strength of one's character above all else.
The book presents a child's fantasies through Benjamin's narrations when he plays pretend, which are often thwarted by the issues he faces. With each new thing he learns from Joshua, and as the events going on around him progress, Benjamin realizes how skewed his perception is of knighthood, from his elitist sense of entitlement to the dilemma of trying to save Toad, a young pickpocket who refused to leave her abuser. "All that he knew, or thought he knew, was turning out to be…off somehow…. Knights, the embodiment of all that was pure and good and right, were supposed to rescue people…. But how did you rescue someone who wouldn't let you rescue them?! Who knew the life of a hero could be so complicated?"
TJ Pohlman encourages his readers to face their fears and self-doubt much like he faced his own demons when he wrote The Parable of a True Knight. He shares that the pain of regret was stronger than the fear of failure, much like Benjamin's turmoil while he and his friends hunted down Lord Talon, the kingdom's trusted Captain of the Guard of many years who grew greedy and selfish. The antagonist represents a charismatic liar and thief who does anything to get his way, traits that weren't too different from what Benjamin displays early on in the story.
Meanwhile, the author also shows that the people one surrounds themselves with can also play a significant role in their lives. Joshua, the young man who mentors Benjamin on the ways of becoming a true knight, is also the prince of the royal kingdom undertaking the quest of finding his sister, the princess who has been missing for years. "You have learned the value of always telling the truth. You have learned how to respect other people, never treating them as less than you. And you have learned that everyone—yourself included—is unique, created for a special purpose…. Through everything that has happened, you never gave up. You never lost hope. At any point you could have quit and run away, but you didn't."
