Taming the Mathilda Monster: Groundbreaking for SR 237 and US 101
WMH Corporation, local dignitaries,and officials celebrated the groundbreaking of the US 101 and SR 237 portion of Mathilda Avenue project on March, 22, 2019. The project groundbreaking took place in the heart of Silicon Valley, California.
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 19, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The US 101 and SR 237 portion of Mathilda Avenue was for a long time, dubbed the "Mathilda Monster" as a result of extensive new commercial development, heavy congestion, and closely spaced intersections on the City's main arterial north-south route. In the summer of 2013, VTA awarded WMH the project named "Mathilda Avenue Improvements at US 101 and SR 237" to drive much needed congestion relief to this portion. The design was completed in 2018 and the construction is scheduled for completion in 2020. Funds from the 2016 Measure B were used to fund this $42M project.
WMH, local dignitaries, and officials celebrated the Groundbreaking of the project at Sheraton Hotel Sunnyvale. In attendance from WMH were CEO and Principal-in-Charge, William Hadaya and Project Manager, Tim Lee. The local dignitaries and officials in attendance included: California State Senator, Jim Beall; City of Sunnyvale Mayor, Larry Klein; City of Santa Clara Council member and VTA Board Chairperson, Teresa O'Neill; Deputy District Director-Caltrans District 4, Doanh Nguyen; and, VTA General Manager, Nuria Fernandez.
Located in the City of Sunnyvale, the project will include the reconstruction of freeway ramps; new and modified signal intersections; retaining walls, pavement rehabilitation, street lighting, signing, striping, drainage, and ramp metering. Work also includes enhanced bicycle and pedestrian facilities to achieve the goal of reducing congestion along Mathilda Avenue and improve mobility for all travel modes.
