Team Constellix Picks Up the Dodge Ball to Fight Juvenile Diabetes
Reston, VA (PRWEB) February 18, 2014 -- It’s time to dip, dive, duck and dodge.
For team Constellix, joining the 9th Annual Dodging Diabetes charity dodge ball tournament March 9 is about building team spirit and workplace camaraderie. However, the ultimate goal is to help support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Joslin Diabetes Center.
The Dodging Diabetes charity, founded by Anna Tiedeman Irwin and Elizabeth Kramer in 2005, raises money to defeat diabetes and educate people about what it really means to live with the disease. Through annual dodge ball tournaments has netted more than $100,000. The two friends have brothers who live with Type 1 diabetes.
"Dodging Diabetes has three goals: to raise money for diabetes research, educate the community about what it means to live with type 1 and to throw the most fun dodge ball tournament out there," said president and co-founder Anna Tiedeman Irwin. "Having the support of Constellix makes it possible to continue doing what we do, and we’re thrilled to work with them on the court and off to knock out diabetes for good."
This is an issue that hits close to home for Steven Job, president of DNS Made Easy, the creators of Constellix. "My son was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when he was 22 months old."
'When we got the diagnosis, we were in shock," Job added. 'There is no cure for this, and it is something he will have to deal with all his life."
More than 25 million people in the U.S. have diabetes. Of that 25 million, about three million people in America have Type 1, or juvenile diabetes. Treatment has gotten better and there are many promising discoveries on the horizon but the fact is - right now - diabetes is a life-long incurable disease.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Normally, the body's immune system fights off foreign invaders like viruses or bacteria. For unknown reasons, in people with type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks various cells in the body. This results in a complete deficiency of the insulin hormone.
"Corporations need to find ways to help in whatever ways we can," Job said. "We have to find a way to fight against the disease so children of all ages don’t end up fighting for their lives."
That’s where team Constellix picks up the dodge ball.
Constellix, which provides real time internet and performance monitoring services for organizations around the world, is not only fielding teams at the 9th Annual Dodging Diabetes charity dodge ball tournament, but the company is also a title sponsor of the event.
"We donate 10 percent of our profits each year to various charities," Job said. "It's a part of how we operate."
The partnership is also a green initiative. The charity fundraiser is certified by the Council for Responsible Sport. Players don’t have to wear Birkenstocks, but event organizers took steps to reduce the event’s carbon footprint by decreasing the amount of waste produced from the event, recycle wherever possible, eat local and organic food, use renewable energy when possible and educate our teams the tournament’s efforts.
This falls in step with DNS Made Easy's going green efforts to combine services into a single unified green initiative to lower its impact on energy and the environment.
