Making a difference in the life of a mother and child

Each day, 3,000 children under the age of five die around the world from preventable causes. That's two children dying, and two mothers grieving, every minute.

empty tomb's Mission Match is seeking ten congregations to apply for Matching Contributions.

Congregations can apply for Mission Match funds to help fund a specific project. The congregation will agree to take a special offering for its mission project. The mission projects that receive matching money will be designed to help reduce global child deaths. The congregation can choose to focus on one of 40 countries having difficulty in reducing the rate of child deaths.

Mother's Day is a fitting time for churches to think about doing such projects.

Each day, 3,000 children under the age of five die around the world from preventable causes. That's two children dying, and two mothers grieving, every minute.

Experts say that the rate of deaths in children around the globe can be reduced. For example, diarrhea is the third biggest killers of these little children, according to an empty tomb analysis of UNICEF and World Health Organization Data in The State of Church Giving through 2017 (Oct. 2019 edition).

Churches are in a good position to help. Churches are linked, through their denominations and para-denominational groups, to one of the best front-lines delivery systems in the world. Churches have communication systems that can keep them informed.

And churches have the moral direction that Jesus loves the little children of the world.

Many churches are not meeting weekly at this time, given COVID-19 restrictions. Yet, many churches continue to communicate with those involved with their congregations through emails, social media, and in other ways.

In this unusual year, churches may want to find a special way to honor all the mothers of the world. Too many mothers face the death of their little children not just during the current pandemic, but all year round every year.

Currently, at least ten churches can receive Matching Contributions by completing the application process at missionmatch.org. Matching Contributions are available in $500 to $3,000 amounts. Mission projects receiving Matching Contributions will be in one of 40 countries, and will be focused on addressing, in Jesus' name, one or more of the causes of death in children in that country.
