As testosterone lawsuits (http://www.testosteronelawsuithub.com/) continue to mount in U.S. courts, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes the publication of a new study which suggests that the use of low testosterone therapy may increase the risk for prostate cancer among older men. The study, which appears in the November issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, looked at 274 men who suffered from low testosterone. A total of 234 were treated with a testosterone gel, while the remaining 40 received a placebo. Overall, the men treated with the gel experienced a rise in prostate-specific antigens (PSAs), which have been linked to a higher incidence of prostate cancer. However, those over 60 experienced the most significant increases in PSAs.*

“The publication of this study comes as hundreds of men pursue testosterone lawsuits for heart attacks and other serious complications they allegedly sustained due to their use of low testosterone therapy. This study serves to remind that these medications may be associated with some significant risks,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is now offering free case reviews to victims of heart attacks, strokes, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and other life-threatening heart problems that were allegedly caused by prescription testosterone medication.

In January, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) launched a safety review of the cardiovascular side effects potentially associated with the use of testosterone replacement therapy. This past September, the agency convened a panel of outside advisors that it tasked with making recommendations for minimizing these risks. The panel ultimately recommended that the manufacturers of the medications be required to conduct studies of their cardiovascular impacts. The advisors also recommended that the labeling for low testosterone therapies be revised to make clear they have not been shown to lessen low libido, weight gain, fatigue and other symptoms typically associated with aging in men.**

Since January, more than 200 testosterone lawsuits have been filed in a multidistrict litigation now underway in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois, on behalf of men who allegedly suffered heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular problems due to their use of low testosterone drugs. Among other things, the lawsuits claim that the manufacturers of testosterone replacement products failed to warn doctors and patients about their potential heart risks, and concealed those dangers from the public. Men who experienced life-threatening heart problems allegedly associated with low testosterone therapy may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
