DALLAS, June 12, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The school year is ending and summer fun is right around the corner. This means trips to the beach, the lake or the pool. Unfortunately, however, every summer sees an increase in drownings, as well as other water-related injuries. In fact, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death.
"Children are especially vulnerable around water, accounting for 2 drowning deaths per day," said Turley, who is board-certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. "My goal this summer is to help kids and families stay safe."
To accomplish this, Turley, who has represented many families who have lost children or have profoundly injured children as a result of swimming pool and boating accidents, suggests that all children take swimming lessons. The Center for Disease Control states that for children between 1 and 4 swim lessons are effective in reducing drowning risk. "However, don't rely on swim lessons alone to keep your kids safe this summer," stressed Turley.
Whenever one's children are in the water a parent or adult should always supervise them. However, numerous drownings still occur when there are several adults in the area because oftentimes they are all assuming that others are watching the kids. "This means it's imperative to always have an adult-designated water-watcher."
Furthermore, children that are weak swimmers or do not swim should never be in the water without an adult and should always wear a life preserver. Be aware that floatation devices are labeled by "Type," and the lower the number the better the protection, and that pool toys and "floaties" should never be used as life preservers.
"Life jackets should also be required when children, even experienced swimmers, are in a murky lake or pond," added Turley. "Finding a child in trouble in murky water is very difficult. Avoid this hazard by having children in a Type 2 or Type 1 life jacket when they are at lakes, ponds or on watercraft."
When it comes to watercraft, just like automobiles, there should always be a designated sober driver and all passengers should wear life jackets. According to the American Boating Association, alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.
"By wearing a life jacket, and staying sober, you will help minimize the likelihood of fatalities, and it's the law," concluded Turley, who is included in Best Lawyers in America and is listed among Texas Super Lawyers.
In addition to honing her skills in the personal injury arena, Turley, an AV Preeminent 5.0 lawyer, teaches other lawyers and writes articles on pre-trial preparation and litigation in personal injury claims. In fact, she has written more than 35 articles on the subject. Turley, since 2013, has been listed by U.S. News and World Report among the Best Lawyers, Personal Injury Litigation – Plaintiffs.
