The Cohen Veterans Network is Building a Lasting Workforce to Serve Veterans & Military Families Nationwide
CVN launches a scholars and fellows effort as part of an ongoing national workforce training program for clinicians interested in receiving high-quality training at Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics across the country
STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In an effort to provide high-quality, culturally-competent care to as many veterans and military families as possible, the Cohen Veterans Network is creating training and clinical practice opportunities for early-career clinicians who share the commitment to serving veterans and military families.
"We know there is a shortage of well-trained mental health professionals, specifically clinicians who can best care for those with the stresses and unique challenges that sometimes stem from military service," said CVN President & CEO Dr. Anthony Hassan. "There is no better place to get practical experience than our Cohen Clinics, which are using the best possible evidence-based treatments with our clients."
Last month, in partnership with the National Council for Behavioral Health, the Cohen Veterans Network released a study revealing the root cause of the country's mental health crisis: America's Mental Health 2018. Among the key findings is a lack of access to quality mental health care, fueled in part by a shortage of culturally-competent providers.
To help address this issue, CVN has launched a Scholars and Fellows training program. After a rigorous application process, CVN has selected two promising individuals this year to become fellows in its Silver Spring, MD and San Antonio, TX clinics. These fellows are former students with a Master's in Social Work who will have access to advanced training, specialty supervision, and tailored exposure to our veteran and military population while gaining their clinical hours for licensure.
"I feel truly lucky to have been selected for the opportunity to be a Cohen Fellow. Not only does this fellowship provide me with the opportunity to continue doing the work that I became so passionate about during my graduate field placement at a Cohen Clinic, but it also affords me opportunities for training and mentorship that help me be the best clinician I can be," said Ava Weiss, Cohen Fellow in Silver Spring. "As a fellow, I will be able to continue to learn and grow while serving the mission of the Cohen Clinics."
There are also CVN Scholars, graduate social work students who receive an additional stipend while gaining valuable experience, at six different Cohen Clinics around the country. These scholars are invited to apply to become Cohen Fellows as they go for their licensure or actively seek out professional roles within the network in areas such as Case Management.
CVN Scholars are currently in place in Cohen Clinics in San Antonio, El Paso, and Dallas, Texas, as well as Silver Spring, Philadelphia, and New York. Learn more about the CVN Scholars and Fellows program here.
