The Florida ECLB Implements New Electrical Continuing Education Requirements

WAKE FOREST, N.C., July 15, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On June 30, 2020, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 1193: Deregulation of Professions and Occupations, which was enacted as law on July 1, 2020. This bill relates to businesses and professionals regulated by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Florida Department of Health, including Electrical, Alarm and Specialty Contractors. TPC Training and JADE Learning are approved continuing education providers for these licensees.

The new law does not affect license expiration dates; any license issued by the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board (ECLB) is still due for renewal on August 31st, every even year. However, the number of continuing education hours required for renewal has decreased for all ECLB licenses, including Certified Electrical Contractor, Certified Alarm System Contractor I and II, Certified Specialty Electrical Contractor, Registered Electrical Contractor, Registered Alarm System Contractor I and II, and Registered Specialty Electrical Contractor licenses.

Prior to July 1st, 2020, all of the electrical licenses listed above required 14 hours of continuing education to renew. The new law drops that down to either 11 hours or 7 hours, depending on the license type. The new requirements are as follows:

Certified and Registered Electrical Contractors:
11 hours of continuing education, including
1 hour Workers' Compensation
1 hour Workplace Safety
1 hour Business Practices
1 hour Florida Laws & Rules
1 hour Florida Building Code advanced module course
6 hours of Technical

For all certified electrical contractors who perform alarm work, 2 hours of False Alarm Prevention must be included in their Technical hours.

Certified and Registered Alarm Contractors:
7 hours of continuing education, including
1 hour Workers' Compensation
1 hour Workplace Safety
1 hour Business Practices
1 hour Florida Laws & Rules
1 hour Florida Building Code advanced module course
2 hours False Alarm Prevention

Certified and Registered Specialty Contractors:
7 hours of continuing education, including
1 hour Workers' Compensation
1 hour Workplace Safety
1 hour Business Practices
1 hour Florida Laws & Rules
1 hour Florida Building Code advanced module course
2 hours general credit
