"What began as a community project to honor the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches has blossomed into a movement celebrating the intersections of history, art, and advocacy," said Lillis Taylor, director of The March Quilts. "We are thrilled to bring this exhibition to Selma in a year of great significance, marking both the anniversary of a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement and our own milestone as an organization."
Since its inception in 2014, The March Quilts has facilitated more than 20 workshops in schools, churches, community centers, and hospitals, engaging local communities to create quilts that reflect their personal and collective narratives. The collection has expanded to cover issues such as racial violence, environmental justice, gender pay equity, and the untold stories of unsung heroines of Alabama. Additionally, the project has partnered with prominent initiatives such as The Lynch Quilts Project by LaShawnda Crowe Storm and the Jefferson County Memorial Project. The March Quilts is supported by our generous funders, the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.
As part of its 10th-anniversary celebration, TMQ is embarking on its most ambitious project yet: completing its quilt collection with a quilting project that will represent all 67 counties of Alabama. Once completed, the collection will become a mobile exhibit, sharing stories of advocacy, history, and joy across the Southeast and eventually nationwide.
