SARASOTA, Fla., Feb. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Patterson Foundation has contributed its first $250,000 match toward the Center for Disaster Philanthropy's (CDP) Global Recovery Fund. The match was triggered after another family foundation contributed $250,000 to the Fund that supports disaster-recovery efforts worldwide. With the match, The Patterson Foundation has contributed $500,000 total to the Fund, including a previous $250,000 gift to support Tropical Cyclone Idai recovery. There are two $250,000 match opportunities from The Patterson Foundation remaining that can each be triggered when private donors give $250,000 to the Fund through Dec. 31, 2020.
The CDP Global Recovery Fund is focused exclusively on addressing medium- and long-term needs following international disasters, like rebuilding infrastructure, supporting mental health services, and boosting damaged agriculture and health sectors. The Fund allows donors to earmark contributions to meet specific international disaster-relief and recovery efforts in response to disasters such as the 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak in China, the Venezuelan refugee crisis, the humanitarian emergency in Yemen, or the massive bushfires in Australia. Alternatively, donors can choose to allow CDP to allocate funding where it is needed most.
"Watching the devastation in Australia unfold has been heartbreaking, and with the country's bushfire season far from over, it's imperative to prepare to respond to the country's long-term needs once the fires subside," said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. "The Center for Disaster Philanthropy's Global Recovery Fund was created with these needs in mind and is poised to strengthen recovery efforts around the world. While support for the Fund has been momentous, needs will continue to grow as damage is assessed and the destruction caused by natural disasters becomes increasingly unpredictable. Through this match, The Patterson Foundation is incentivizing private donors by strengthening their individual impact."
The Patterson Foundation has long supported CDP, contributing more than $4 million since 2012 in response to major disasters such as Hurricanes Harvey, Florence and Michael, and the Global Refugee Crisis. This latest gift and the remaining match opportunities are an effort to catalyze additional donations from other funders monitoring damages caused by international disasters, like the ongoing Australian bushfires.
"We are grateful to these two foundations for their generous support of this Fund," said Robert G. Ottenhoff, president and CEO of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. "Donations for disaster-relief and recovery efforts typically decline following the immediate aftermath of a disaster, leaving most long-term recovery efforts underfunded. Visionary funders like these have a substantial and meaningful impact on the ability for international communities to recover."
