New Awards Honor Top Composers of 10-Minute "Small Symphonies", a Concept Created to Make Classical Music More Conducive to Online Streaming and to Reach Younger Audiences
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 25, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today The Symphonina Foundation is pleased to officially announce the winner of the first annual Best Symphonina of the Year competition for 2022. First prize winner, Chris Reed (USA), was awarded the $2000 grand prize. Steve Locks (UK) was selected as runner-up and earns the $1000 runner-up prize. The accomplished nine-judge panel was comprised of Christopher Siu, Ryan Leach, Dimitri K., Mauritz Lotz, Meredith Moore, Wilhelm von Dungen, Gary Gray, David Das, and Christopher Wilkins. Other contest entries of distinction were composed by James Dumas, Marc Caroul, and Richard White (USA).
Symphoninas are small symphonies, written with 3 or 4 movements with melodic themes, and play in about 10 minutes. The genre of the Symphonina was created by Dr. David Fogel, co-founder of The Symphonina Foundation, as a way to help symphonic music become more amenable to online streaming and reaching younger audiences. "We had 11 entries to the competition, and I enjoyed listening to each of them!", said Dr. David Fogel, CEO of The Symphonina Foundation. "We will be working with the composers to have all of the selected compositions linked from the foundation's website so the world can enjoy them."
In addition to the contest, The Symphonina Foundation is also currently preparing for the release of the Foundation's first album featuring live performances by the players in the International Symphonina Orchestra, along with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. In 2022, Budapest Scoring recorded Dr. Fogel's compositions Symphonina No. 1 and Symphonina No. 2. Now, individual players from around the world have also been recorded as part of the International Symphonina Orchestra. This virtual/remote orchestra was formed to provide an opportunity for young players to play along with experienced professionals and promote opportunities for young people internationally. The orchestra comprises excellent young performers from the USA, Nigeria, Argentina, France, and other countries playing along with virtuosos such as violinist and concertmaster Oleksander Bozhyk (Ukraine), former touring concert pianist Chetan Tierra (USA), and Grammy-winning flute player Wouter Kellerman (South Africa). "We welcome auditions from talented young players from around the world," said Dr. Fogel.
You can see the entire International Symphonina Orchestra at http://www.symphonina.org. Additional recordings are being considered for the first album at this time. The 2022 Best Symphonina of the Year competition runner-up, Steve Locks, has already made his composition available on YouTube, here.
