ATLANTA, Feb. 19, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Team Type 1 Foundation, a nonprofit organization pursuing a global mission of education, empowerment, and equal access to medicine for everyone affected by diabetes, announced a partnership with VeloCity, a fundraising ride benefiting Grady Hospital, around the shared goals of wellness and cycling.
The third annual VeloCity event takes place on May 2nd and begins on the Mercedes-Benz Stadium field and ends at the Home Depot Backyard. The event, designed for cyclists of all experience levels, features four full-supported routes ranging from a 62-100 mile pro ride, a 20-mile beginner option, and a seven-mile kids ride. Additionally, there will be indoor cycling classes taking place at the Home Depot Backyard. In 2019, more than 1,330 riders participated in the event, which is the only cycling event based in downtown Atlanta.
"The Team Type 1 Foundation is honored to officially partner with such a beloved institution in the Atlanta area. Our alliance with VeloCity and the Grady Health Foundation allows us to continue increasing public awareness of diabetes and showing what's possible with the condition," Team Type 1 Foundation Founder and President Phil Southerland said. "Frequently people with type 1 diabetes are told they cannot participate in sports. The Team Type 1 Foundation works to change the perception of diabetes and sports, and together with VeloCity, we are eager to empower people to get out and ride."
"There are few things more important than the overall health of our community. VeloCity was created three years ago to help fund the care that Grady provides to thousands of patients every year and to create an opportunity to bring our city together in a way that celebrates wellness," Grady Health Foundation President Joselyn Baker added. "We could not be more excited about this partnership with Team Type 1 and look forward not only to cheering on their team this May but to working together to grow this into one of Atlanta's marquis sporting events."
There is much more to the VeloCity event than just riding. It kicks off with a group pre-ride breakfast and concludes with a post-ride celebration with lunch, drinks, music and amenities such as a shower trailer, massage tent and activities for kids.
Medalist Sports, who are known for putting on large scale cycling events like the Tour of California, handle the management of the event. All rides are fully supported with rest stops every 10 miles, support vehicles, and a rider tracking system.
The Team Type 1 Foundation has pledged to raise more than $100,000 around the event. As part of its fundraising efforts, the Team Type 1 Foundation will bring riders from the Team Novo Nordisk development team, all who race with type 1 diabetes.
