Both an engrossing adventure and a savvy political commentary, this pungent, revelatory odyssey records an eruption of violence, ethnic conflict and repression in the crumbling empire
THE WOODLANDS, Texas, March 13, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Based on a true story, Red Odyssey is a sophisticated action-packed travelog describing the automobile journey unfolding against the backdrop of exotic scenery few modern Westerners have seen. Throughout the perilous ten-thousand-mile journey, author Marat Akchurin, fluent in the European and Asian crosscurrents of exasperating Soviet life, depends upon the kindness and generosity of strangers and friends alike. They ease the pain and suffering inherent in Soviet life, while lending a Chaucerian quality to the fast-paced narrative. Diverse trades and professions are represented, among them—auto mechanic, poet, engineer, folk singer, politician, mental patient, prostitute and archpriest. Erudite and action-packed, poetic and personable, this a resonant portrait of nation rocked by political and ethnic riots.
Although his story takes place in the past, Akchurin contends that it's relevant today as it explores the eternal characteristics of humanity. "My book tells the adventures of a time-traveler who tries to survive in a surrealistic society that is permeated with Orwellian hypocrisy and lies," said Akchurin. "At the same time, it deals with the universal human traits, that's why it's equally valid for all eras, both past, present and future. Knowing history gives us an opportunity to learn from other nations' past mistakes. Unfortunately, it seems that the only thing that we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history."
Akchurin was born and raised in the former USSR. He worked as an interpreter of Arabic in both Egypt and Iraq. Then he served at various editor positions for major publishing houses in Russia. Since perestroika, he has worked as an independent theater producer and independent publisher, bringing to the stage Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard and publishing Freud in Russia for the first time since 1920s.
Enamored with the ideological and physical freedoms then enjoyed within the United States of America, Akchurin left his prosperous life as a "New Russian" in Moscow to begin anew in California. Building from scratch as a translator, he soon realized technology would dominate the future of linguistics. After studying the basics of computer science at a community college and taking courses in natural language processing at the University of Maryland, he found work developing linguistic computer applications. He then founded his own company to evolve the role of technology in linguistics, employing hundreds of linguists and engineers.
"Writing this book gave me an opportunity to show through a kaleidoscope of individual perspectives, the fate of a whole country. But please make note that it is not a political treatise," said Akchurin. "It's rather an adventure book ready for the movie adaptation."
