According to court documents, plaintiffs in these cases allege that they have developed Type II diabetes as a result of taking Lipitor, the cholesterol-lowering statin drug manufactured by Pfizer, Inc. The MDL has been approved for centralization in South Carolina due to the recent increase in plaintiffs.

Claimants who wish to be included in the Lipitor MDL must be women 75 years of age and younger with a body mass index of 32 or less who took Lipitor and developed Type II diabetes.
A study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association on January 23, 2012 researched the link between Type II diabetes and cholesterol-lowering statins like Lipitor, concluding that women 50-79 years old had a 48% increase in developing the condition if they had taken the drug.
