The Discovery House a Sponsor of Relay for Life
Reseda, Calif (PRWEB) June 18, 2014 -- The Discovery House was once again a sponsor of the annual Relay for Life of Reseda event. The relay took place Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Cleveland High School in Reseda. Volunteers from The Discovery House helped with set up for the event, and the treatment center was a sponsor of the fundraiser.
Every year, the American Cancer Society holds Relay for Life events throughout the country to remember those that have fought against cancer and to raise funds to support cancer research. The Reseda relay took place over a 24 hour period, during which time teammates took turns walking around a track. The first lap was called a Survivors Lap, featuring those that have personally defeated cancer. A Luminaria Ceremony took place in the evening with candles lining the track to remember and honor those that have been lost to cancer. A Fight Back Ceremony on the second day was a time for inspiration, as each participant was encouraged to take action in their own way against this devastating disease.
The first Relay for Life event took place in 1985, when a single runner walked and ran around a track for 24 hours to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The event has steadily grown over the years, and today more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries hold Relay events. Relay for Life events are full of fun, food, and games for the entire community.
The American Cancer Society encourages everyone to do what they can to fight against cancer. "With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer – we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Each person who shares the Relay for Life experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten our loved ones or rob anyone of another birthday."
