The Grant Professional Certification Institute® Appoints Julie Assel as Board of Directors President

The Grant Professional Certification Institute's (GPCI) Board of Directors voted on November 7, 2019 to appoint Julie Assel president of their Board effective January 1, 2019.

As the newly appointed GPCI Board President, Assel will help lead the organization in continuing its mission to provide a standard of excellence for the grant profession. She is President and CEO of Kansas City-based Assel Grant Services, as well as the current chair of GPCI’s Marketing Committee, a member of the Nomination Committee, a Certification Maintenance Program committee member, and a member of the Accreditation Committee.

GPCI is the awarding body of the nationally-recognized Grant Professional Certification (GPC) credential. In 1999, three organizations closely associated with the field of grants began identifying and validating the competencies and skills grant professionals should possess if they are to fulfill their duties and obligations in grantsmanship. Until the Grant Professional Certification (GPC) was established, it was difficult for organizations to gauge a grant professional’s competency, and those seeking assistance with their grants crossed their fingers in hope of hiring an experienced, ethical grant professional. Addressing these concerns led to the creation of a certification process. In 2004, GPCI was incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and offered its first exam in 2007.

“Via my roles with Assel Grant Services and GPCI, I see grant writers constantly demonstrating the value they bring to an organization seeking grant funding. Having the GPC credential reflects that value and is why I have advocated for professional credentialing for many years and served the GPCI in several roles, including its strategic plan early on and nationally positioning the credential,” Assel explains. “Assel Grant Services has six GPCs on staff, more than any other firm in the country. I believe in the value the GPCI brings to our industry and being appointed president is an honor.”

Assel will serve a one-year term as president and could possibly serve up to two more years until her term is complete in 2021.

The Grant Professionals Certification Institute confers the Grant Professional Certification (GPC) to those who meet eligibility requirements and successfully exhibit proficiency in the required competencies. The GPC credential is based on rigorous standards and ongoing research necessary to meet real-world challenges of grant professionals. GPC credentialed grant professionals are committed to excellence in their profession and, on average, report higher earnings than those without the credential.
