The “Internet in Everything” Has Arrived
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 26, 2014 -- Wireless connectivity graced almost every device revealed at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this month, including smart ovens, smart cars and smart calorie-counters. EverSpark Interactive co-founder Jason Hennessey says that the way people use technology is about to change again—possibly more so than when the first smartphone was introduced.
This year's CES showed off innovations from over 3,200 companies, and the majority featured wireless “smart” gadgets according to Techland (retrieved 1.24.2014). Hennessey says this is part of the shift toward the “Internet of Everything,” in which almost all objects have microprocessors and connectivity to enhance their performance.
“People understand why a smart watch or even a wireless blood glucose monitor are great inventions,” Hennessey said. “But we're seeing manufacturers put wi-fi and intelligence in beds.”
That could allow a “smart bed” to better respond to a person's sleep preferences, or to automatically change settings depending on who's using it, he said.
“The Internet of Everything means we'll soon live in a world where almost anything you own can be accessed and activated remotely, or report back helpful stats on how you use it,” Hennessey said. “These items will be in stores in the next two to five years.”
Hennessey said the Internet of Everything approach is a logical next step in a world with digital communication. But he acknowledges it will bring a new wave of skepticism and ethical questions.
“The debate over privacy on Facebook will look minor when even your thermostat notices your personal usage habits,” he said. “A world with more smart devices is a world with more recorded personal data.”
He doesn't believe most smart devices will endanger privacy, however.
“It's hard to imagine hackers doing much with the data from your toaster oven.”
