The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet to Open 2013-2014 Season at Soka Performing Arts Center
Aliso Viejo, CA (PRWEB) July 29, 2013 -- “We’re proud to offer Southern California audiences the chance to enjoy the Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet on September 21, 2013 at 8 pm – which will open an amazing new season at Soka University’s new performing arts center,” announced David Palmer, General Manager of Soka Performing Arts Center. “I’m looking forward to hearing their new work – especially the new piece "Yambe" by Cuban American composer Carlos Rivera that was co-commissioned by Soka University, 92nd St. Y Foundation and the University of Vermont Bishop Lane Series. When LAGQ plays in the Center along with members of the USC Thornton Classical Guitar Department you will want to be there…it will be an evening to remember!”
The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is comprised of four uniquely accomplished musicians - John Dearman, William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant and Matthew Grief - bringing their unique energy to the concert stage with programs ranging from Bluegrass to Bach. They consistently play to sold-out houses world-wide. Their inventive, critically acclaimed transcriptions of concert masterworks provide a fresh look at the music of the past, while their interpretations of works from the contemporary and world-music realms continually break new ground.
In their 2013-14 season, LAGQ will play Latin-inspired works, including Mexican, Brazilian, Venezuelan and Caribbean pieces, and the newly commissioned piece entitled "Yambe." They will also play brilliant arrangements of traditional classical works like Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2 and Stravinsky's Circus Polka.
LAGQ’s Guitar Heroe CD (2005 Grammy Award) followed their Grammy nominated LAGQ-Latin. Spin (2006) continued their explorations of jazz and contemporary music. LAGQ: BRAZIL (2007). Their recording of the Rodrigo “Concierto Andaluz” and Sergio Assad’s “Interchange”, written specifically for them, was released in 2010, and the live DVD of The Ingenious Gentleman: Don Quixote was released in 2012.
The LAGQ concert will be followed in September and October by the Soka International Jazz Festival, Danza Floricanto/USA, Pacific Symphony’s Sunday at Soka, the Italian Opera Festival and the Julliard String Quartet. The complete season can be viewed at http://www.performingarts.soka.edu.
