The Paw Project Documentary Is Now Available on Netflix

"The Paw Project" chronicles the group's grassroots campaign to stop the practice of declawing and their legislative successes in California. Their billboard and bumper sticker campaign, "If You're for De-clawing Cats, Raise Your Hand," depicts a human hand with each finger severed at the last joint. The imagery provides a graphic and anatomically-correct representation of the declaw surgery performed on cats, as does their PSA, which can be viewed on YouTube. Banned or considered unethical in many countries worldwide, declaw surgery is commonly performed in the U.S. and Canada to prevent cats from scratching furniture. Since a cat's claw grows from within the last bone of its toe, declawing requires an amputation at the last "knuckle." Many pet owners believe that declawing is a normal, harmless procedure, when in fact it is a painful and unnecessary surgery that can result in long-term physical and behavioral problems.
As a result of the Paw Project’s efforts, the California cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Burbank, Santa Monica, Berkeley, Beverly Hills, Culver City and West Hollywood have passed legislation banning declawing of domestic cats. Nowhere else in North America has declawing been banned.
"Declawing is one of the most painful surgeries routinely performed by veterinarians, and it can result in serious physical and behavioral complications," said Jennifer Conrad, DVM, who founded the nonprofit Paw Project in 2000 to promote public awareness about the crippling effects of declawing, to rehabilitate declawed cats through reparative surgery, and to end the practice of declawing. "We hope that the video serves to illustrate the truth about declawing. Many people don't know what the surgery entails and this is a case where a picture is worth a thousand words," Conrad added.
