Salimetrics was founded by Douglas A. Granger, PhD, in the 1990s, when the traditional immunodiagnostic industry leaders hesitated to support research on salivary analytes. “We needed specialized saliva collection tools and immunoassays designed to preserve saliva-specific sample integrity in order to integrate salivary analyses into several research programs,” says Granger. “As a junior faculty member at Penn State University, I started the company in the University's research park. State College, PA was a fine location when the company was a start-up, but it was clear very early on that if Salimetrics was to reach its full potential its intellectual hub needed to be in either Boston or San Diego.” Salimetrics then began planning a strategic initiative to plant a future technology center in one of these locations. “These communities are world renowned for fostering the development of biotechnology companies; each has a highly sophisticated work force of molecular and cellular scientists with extensive networks of mature biotechnology vendors and suppliers. To access this extended network, Salimetrics executed a plan to locate the company's headquarters, research and development teams, and analytical laboratories in Carlsbad, CA,” says Hans. Utilizing this biotechnology network, Salimetrics will enable collaborative opportunities to provide further growth for the saliva-community. “To support the field of salivary bioscience as it evolves to its next level,” says Granger, “Salimetrics also must evolve.”
The new technology center formally opened its doors on October 20, 2013. The manufacturing division of Salimetrics will remain in State College, PA. Salimetrics has a broad hiring plan underway to build strength in multiple areas of the company. The scientific leadership is now under the direct supervision of Steve W. Granger, PhD, and Salimetrics’ CSO. “We have an aggressive product development plan with the expectation that Salimetrics will double its immunoassay kit product line within 3 years, and the field of salivary bioscience will welcome plans to expand our analytical laboratory services to include a more diverse range of salivary analytes,” says Steve Granger. “Overall, the investment Salimetrics is making in the new technology center will facilitate the field of salivary bioscience.” The history of science shows very clearly that advances in technology often precede rapid advances in knowledge and discovery. “The next many years will be a fascinating period to witness as salivary bioscience develops beyond its infancy and the knowledge accumulating is translated to make a difference in people’s lives,” says founder Douglas Granger.
