The University of Utah’s Gymnastics Team Installs Bacteria Killing Light Fixtures to Help Keep Student-Athletes Safe
SALT LAKE CITY and KENOSHA, Wisc. (PRWEB) December 06, 2018 -- The University of Utah’s Gymnastics team is the first Division I NCAA Team to purchase and install LED light fixtures containing Indigo-Clean continuous environmental disinfection. The lights are installed in the team’s athletic training room.
“We are excited to be at the forefront of collegiate gymnastics programs across the nation by providing this new, proven bacteria fighting technology as another tool to help keep our student-athletes safe,” said Tom Farden, Head Coach, University of Utah Gymnastics. “This is one small facet of the student-athlete Wellbeing Program that our institution utilizes to ensure the safety, success and support of our student-athletes.”
Indigo-Clean technology uses a 405nm light to penetrate harmful bacteria, including MRSA. It targets naturally-occurring molecules within the bacteria to produce intra-cellular Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Similar to bleach, these ROS create an oxidative environment that kills harmful bacteria. This technology has been tested in a laboratory setting and has been shown to kill harmful bacteria often found in high-touch areas.
“Bacterial staph infections such as MRSA (methicillin-resident Staphylococcus aureus) were once mostly found in hospitals, clinics and health care settings,” said Cliff Yahnke, PhD, Director of Clinical Affairs for Indigo-Clean. “About 25 years ago, it began plaguing high school, college and professional teams throughout the nation, making prevention a necessary part of the play-book. We are thrilled the University of Utah’s Gymnastics program has chosen to invest in Indigo-Clean to enhance their current cleaning methods within their training room.”
Yahnke also noted, “These luminaires provide solid lighting efficacy and disinfection at basically the same cost as a standard LED luminaire. They bolster current cleaning methods by helping eliminate harmful bacteria in these types of spaces, reaching places normal cleaning doesn’t touch.”
