Cary, NC (PRWEB) November 06, 2014 -- The V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the nation’s leading cancer research funding organizations, is pleased to announce the 2014 Translational and V Scholar Grant recipients. The Translational Grant Program supports scientists transforming lab discoveries into clinical applications. The V Scholar program is designed to identify, retain and further the careers of talented young cancer investigators. This year, The V Foundation awarded nearly $15 million in research grants nationwide.

The V Foundation’s Translational Grant Program continues to bring the benefits of basic-level understandings to the patient bedside more quickly and efficiently. This year, 12 cancer scientists were awarded grants for their research seeking to gain insight from cancer patients in an effort to accelerate medical discoveries. Translational grant recipients will each receive $600,000 over a three-year period.
The V Scholar Program provides funds directly to young scientists who are developing their own independent laboratory research projects. Twenty V Scholar Grants will each receive $200,000 over a two-year period. These grants enable “rising star” scientists to establish their laboratories and gain the competitive edge necessary to earn additional funding. The V Foundation has awarded more than $130 million in research grants that have been leveraged into more than $1 billion in additional funding.
“The V Foundation plays a critical role in accelerating the careers of the most promising young cancer researchers through the V Scholar Program. These young investigators are the best of the best,” said Dr. Robert Bast, Vice President for Translational Research at MD Anderson Cancer Center and member of The V Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee. “Through its Translational Research awards, the Foundation sees that some of the most exciting strategies from the laboratory are tested promptly in the clinic where they can improve the outcome for patients with cancer.”
The V Foundation distributes research grants to the most promising scientists nationwide through a competitive process vetted by a Scientific Advisory Committee. The Committee, comprised of the nation’s leading physicians and research scientists from prominent universities and cancer centers, ensures proposals meet the highest standards of scientific merit and that funding is properly allocated.
This announcement coincides with The V Foundation receiving its fourth consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities. Awarding four out of a possible four stars for sound fiscal management as well as commitment to accountability and transparency, Charity Navigator has differentiated The V Foundation from its peers and demonstrates to the public that the Foundation is worthy of their trust. The fourth consecutive 4-star rating places The V Foundation in the top 7% of charities rated by Charity Navigator.
