While the addiction specialists at the Waismann Method® are widely known for their expertise in opioid detox, many of their patients also have comorbid alcohol abuse problems. Many of the same detoxification principles that are used to treat people dependent on opioids can be applied to people dependent on alcohol. Alcohol-dependent individuals often need substantial doses of benzodiazepines in the early stages of withdrawal, for example, to prevent alcohol-withdrawal seizures and delirium tremens (better known as DTs). Delirium tremens typically begins 48 to 96 hours after the patient's last drink and lasts for up to five days. The hallmarks of DTs are disorientation, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, elevated body temperature, extreme agitation, sweating, and hallucinations. A separate condition called alcoholic hallucinosis is separate from the hallucinations that occur during delirium tremens and can develop within 12 to 24 hours of the patient's last drink.

Patients who enter the detoxification program are followed at a JCAHO-accredited hospital supervised by Waismann Method® medical director, Michael H. Lowenstein, MD.
