The Weiss School Announces 10 Students Headed to National History Competitions
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (PRWEB) June 02, 2016 -- Students from The Weiss School in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, are headed to two national history championships in Illinois and Maryland next week after dominating the Florida 2016 South Region National History Bee and the Palm Beach County Florida History Fair competitions. Steven Hammerman, The Weiss School social studies teacher, is also among a distinguished group of 56 finalists nominated for a national “Teacher of the Year” award from National History Day, a nonprofit educational organization based in College Park, Maryland.
The National History Bee tests students’ knowledge of American and world history, from early civilization to recent events. The Weiss School, a top performer in the regional event, will send seven students to the two-day national competition in Chicago that begins June 10, 2016. These students include William Mayville, Jack Bental and Evan Vera in the Elementary Division and Mark Shteyman, Alex Missen, Finch Davis and Dhilan Krishnasamy in the Middle School Division. The seven students were among the top eight regional finalists.
The Florida History Fair competition, sponsored by the Museum of Florida History, is part of an annual, statewide National History Day activity in which sixth through 12th grade students use primary and secondary sources to research a local, national or world history-related topic. This year’s theme was “Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History.” The Weiss School dominated the Junior Division of the Palm Beach County History Fair competition with 24 students making up 63% of the Palm Beach County students qualifying to advance to the state competition. At the state level, The Weiss School’s Nanako Kondo, Asher Moss and Zoe Krishtul took second place in the Junior Group History Performance category. The three students will represent the state of Florida at the National History Day competition June 12 – 16 held at the University of Maryland in College Park.
Hammerman, the leader of The Weiss School Social Studies “Center of Excellence,” was recently awarded the Junior Division Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award for the state of Florida. As the Florida winner, Hammerman now moves on to compete for the National Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award honoring the educator who has shown outstanding creativity, commitment and inspiration in developing student interest in history education. Winners will be announced at the National History Day awards ceremonies in Maryland on June 16 and will receive $10,000 in honor of their efforts to encourage and support history education.
