The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas and Texas Monthly Announce Brennan Vineyards 4.0 Cellars Mourvedre 2013 "Texas Wine of the Year"
Austin, TX (PRWEB) March 03, 2016 -- The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas and Texas Monthly have announced Brennan Vineyards 4.0 Cellars Mourvedre 2013 as Texas Wine of the Year for 2015. The honor was appointed to the 2013 vintage by Texas Monthly wine editor and Certified Sommelier Jessica Dupuy and presented by WFFT Board President Michael Russell at the Foundation's annual Toast & Roast event, held Sunday, February 28 at Stonehouse Villa in Driftwood, Texas.
The 4.0 Cellars Mourvedre 2013 is the creation of Brennan Cellars winemaker Todd Webster, who joined Brennan Vineyards in 2007. A blend of 78 percent Mourvèdre and 22 percent Ruby Cabernet, this wine is a perfect match for braised short ribs or roasted prime rib. Alluring notes of sarsaparilla, smoked meats, and rich raspberries and blackberries dance, revealing a deeply structured wine with ripe fruit and a kiss of earthiness.The wine has a youthful, light intensity displaying fruit flavors of sour cherries, red currants and under-ripe strawberries. Non-fruit flavors present are worn leather, humus and hay. Subtle floral notes of violet appear once the wine has opened up.

Texas Monthly writer Jessica Dupuy, a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers as well as Certified Specialist of Wine and Spirits through the Society of Wine Educators, has been tasting Texas wines with a team of sommeliers for four years to create the “Best Texas Wines” list. For this year’s evaluation, Jessica, along with Master Sommeliers James Tidwell and June Rodil, sampled more than 120 Texas wines in a blind tasting.
The sampled wines, all of which are required to be Texas appellation, a distinction that requires more than 75 percent of the wine is produced using grapes grown in-state, were wrapped in tissue paper to hide the labels and poured by volunteers. Wines were stored at appropriate temperatures before tasting. After each round of wine was poured, they were evaluated based on standard tasting criteria modeled from the Court of Master Sommeliers: five points per category of nose, palate, structure, balance, and finish for a potential total score of 25. The 4.0 Cellars Mourvedre 2013 was a unanimous favorite from the entire tasting.
