Three Filmmaking Friends Unveil Bingeable-Sized Comedic Series "Mystery Mansion" In NYC
Join this special, one-time screening, of a wacky and mystical comedy series that features puppetry, animation and old school visual gags and effects, from a diverse set of creative voices.
NEW YORK, Nov. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- New York-based actors, comedians, co-creators and friends Mike Handelman, Isaiah Mueller and Hunter West, will host a one-time screening of Mystery Mansion, a bingeable-sized web series directed by award-winning filmmaker Joe Whelski, on Sunday, December 9 at Anthology Film Archives from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The show was written by three friends who met on New York City's comedy scene, and specifically taps into the trend for content that can be consumed and digested as quickly as possible.
"The goal was to make something both serialized and tightly packed with lore, jokes and characters both wacky and mystical, that you could easily binge in one sitting while taking in what feels like a season of TV. To accomplish this, we brought in a combination of puppets, visual effects and amazing set design", said show-runner, co-creator and co-star Mike Handelman.
One of the core values of the Mystery Mansion team is showcasing a diversity of creative voices. The team represents a variety of ethnicities, nationalities, genders and sexual orientations.
"Being a gay man of mixed race adds color to my character. Diversity can add so many fresh dimensions to comedy & genre stories in general. Which has traditionally been seen mostly through a heteronormative lense, and we're excited to break those tropes," Mueller said.
Not only did they conceptualize the script based on their mutual interests and desire to showcase their artistic talent, but they utilized their collective network to create a crack production team.
Contributing a wealth of experience behind the scenes is Producer Nelson Moses Lassiter, founder of Denouement Entertainment; Director & Co-Producer Joe Whelski, founder of Secret Station Films; Jimmy Xie, Director of Photography; Dylan Mars Greenberg, Animator & Visual Effects Director; and Rocco George, Puppeteer & Illustrator.
"We wear many hats during the show," West said. "When an entire series is brought to life by a handful of people, it's safe to say they are doing a lot of work."
The Series is being screened in association with Anthology Film Archives, a platform focused on independent, experimental, and avant-garde cinema. Proceeds from the screening will fund the Mystery Mansion team and enable them to continue creating content.
Following the show screening, the young creatives will lend insights and explore how the unconventional web series came to life and the lessons learned during a panel discussion. A meet and greet reception with the cast will take place after the panel discussion at Slainte.
"In the future, we will all be creators...it will be the norm. If you mix the right elements together, you can set yourself up for success and the potential for magic to happen... and it's very exciting," Whelski said.
