Major investment represents property owner's commitment to address years of dangerous activity along Lathrop Way, prevent future insecurities
SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 2, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- CMS Lathrop Way, LLC, managed by DCCO, has completed the purchase of excess land along the levee on Lathrop Way. The parcel, which was recently declared as surplus property by the American River Flood Control District, runs adjacent to the Johnston Business Park and has been the subject of repeated pleas with city and state officials to intervene since late 2019. As the property owner and manager of a five-building asset within the business park, DCCO has been one of several parties involved in discussions with the City of Sacramento, Sacramento Police Department and other officials to collaborate on a long-term solution that would ease the safety concerns of its small business tenants, including some that offer vital health services and programs to the local community.
"For the past several years, we have pressed local officials to take a more active role in addressing a variety of dangerous and illegal activities along Lathrop Way which have endangered our business tenants and the people living in the encampment," said property owner Phil Rolla. "As we continue to await an authoritative response from the City of Sacramento, purchasing this land parcel has proven to be one of our team's most constructive steps toward establishing a greater sense of safety and security in the area."
Following a three-week notification process to prompt inhabitants of the encampment to vacate the land parcel, DCCO commenced with a planned cleanup project on March 3, 2023. Officers from the Sacramento Police Department were present to help enforce the relocation of people and possessions, and a team from Sacramento-based Forensiclean assisted with the disposal of potentially hazardous materials.
Years of Dangerous Activity Along Lathrop Way:
Since it first took shape in November 2019, the encampment has been the site of various illicit, illegal and dangerous activities that caused business owners and their clients to fear for their safety. Some examples include:
- More than 150 cars, RVs and other vehicles, including at least one boat, have been parked along a congested roadway, many for months at a time
- At least four trailers and one propane tank have caught fire and/or exploded since 2021
- At least four dead bodies have been found in and around the encampment since 2020
- Observed illegal drug use and solicitation from sex workers and other individuals living in the encampment
- Potential structural damage to the American River levees in the area due to campfires and individuals camping directly on the levees themselves
Along with other business owners in the Johnston Business Park, the property management team at DCCO continues to seek assistance from City of Sacramento officials.
