The world we live in today if someone or some foreign country wants to hack into your website there is probably not much you can do about it.
The point is the level of sophistication is so immense that our NSA and others are vulnerable so what does that leave us, with the mom an pop shops or other small businesses are we at risk?
The short answer is yes.
There are some steps you can take to prevent the less sophisticated ones from defacing your site.
#1 Zero Day Hacks
What is a zero-day?
Very simple. Remember in Jurrasic Park the original, how the Raptors tested the fences to find the weak points. There are people that are called penetration testers. Most do it for profit say Apple has a glitch that can cause an unwanted intrusion and they can show this to Apple, and get paid a reward or bounty. This all they do for a living, and they get paid very well.
The fact is most sites don't get regular upgrades they need, so when your site is not maintained, you may be suspectable to a Zero-day hack which is the weak point in the fence. You may think this some tremendous foreign power, but it could be a 14-year-old in Bulgaria sitting in his parent's basement doing it for fun with no monetary value only for bragging rights.
The Solution: Update your site regularly or hire a company like JW Maxx Solutions to maintain it.
#2 Make multiple layers of entry to the login:
For example, the most popular platform is WordPress to access the login panel all you need to do is type the company name then /wp-login.php. Now you are in the login section most sites that are made are set to default the username to Admin.
The hacker types in Admin and runs a series of bots that will work different combinations over and over again till they get the right one. Also what about your Facebook they can tell all about you they know your children's name their birthdays your birthdays your dog's names and so many other things that could be added to the bot code to narrow the field down making it that much easier.
Wordpress offers many plugins that can be used to customize the login access by having to type in another phrase to gain access to the main panel. Afterward, you can set the username to something other than Admin making access that makes it much harder. Then you can install another plugin to lock out attempts made more than three times and add an IP locator to see where the intrusion is coming from. Most likely they will be using a VPN that allows them to change there IP, but after a while, they will run out of IP's. Sooner or later they will give up.
#3 Back up the site every week:
The safest way to reface if being hacked is to clean the files on the servers running malware programs then reinstall the backup. This will take you about a few hours to restore it.
Remember these tips they can help you quite a bit. Also, try not to keep sensitive information on your site and for transactions use Paypal or other trusted third party payment processing sites they have a much higher level of security
