What are pop-ups?

From a digital marketing perspective, a pop-up is a simple website window that overlays the primary window. This overlay encourages an action by the page visitor such as registering for an email list, newsletter, or event. When pop-ups first became popular, they tended to be annoying and disruptive to a visitor, primarily because marketers did not understand the best practices to utilize for maximum effectiveness with this tool. It is important to recognize that pop-ups are a valuable style of the call-to-action (CTA) which is a critical component of a successful website.

Actions by the visitor trigger the basic pop-up messages:

  • Entry – When someone lands on a page the pop-up is launched
  • Exit – When the cursor is moved to the top of a page which can indicate clicking away the pop-up is launched
  • Click – When a visitor clicks on a link the pop-up is launched
  • Timed – After a predetermined amount of time on a page the pop-up is launched
  • Scroll – After a visitor scrolls to a specific point on a page the pop-up is launched

While not everyone recognizes the value in using pop-ups, these top tips will increase the effectiveness of their use and should be considered for any page utilizing this conversion method:

  • Focus on exits – The exit pop-up should be the version primarily used to encourage conversions while providing a good user experience. It is less disruptive than at any other point and not interrupting their journey on the site as they are about to leave. Entry pop-ups should be used the least as they immediately interrupt the journey. Click, timed, and scrolling pop-ups are all useful in specific situations to help nudge a visitor towards an action.
  • Easy to exit – Pop-ups should have a close button in the top right corner such as [Close X] to allow visitors a quick and effortless way to remove the overlay. Sites that hide the close button or use buttons that delay in appearing are simply delaying the inevitable.
  • Once per visit – Pop-ups should be limited to one per site visitor by a user to avoid irritating the visitor. Most people do not like to be badgered. Cookies should be used to track visitors as well as being used to ensure repeat customers are not constantly bombarded by pop-ups that are unnecessary.
  • Consider intent – The message used on the pop-up should be relevant to the page it is overlaying.   • Testing – Important elements of a website should always be tested thoroughly using A/B testing.
