Americans Overwhelmingly Support Remote and Hybrid Work Options for Federal Employees
GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico, Jan. 30, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As President Trump's recent executive orders requiring federal employees to return to the office fuel national controversy, the Remote Work Divide report from MyPerfectResume® reveals that employees are pushing back hard against rigid return-to-office (RTO) mandates. With 51% of workers stating they would quit immediately over non-negotiable RTO policies, and another 40% claiming they would immediately start searching for a remote job, the findings share a growing clash between employee preferences and employer demands.
This nationwide survey of 1,044 U.S. workers highlights shifting workplace priorities, driven by lingering pandemic impacts and the rise of flexible work arrangements, as employees increasingly prioritize flexibility, autonomy, and well-being over traditional office requirements.
Key Findings:
- Feds Should Have the Right to Remote Work: Over three-quarters of Americans (77%) support remote or hybrid options for federal employees, with less than 1 in 4 (23%) saying federal workers need to be on-site full-time.
- Remote Work Reigns Supreme: Nearly half (45%) of respondents prefer fully remote work, 33% favor a hybrid model, and just 22% opt for on-site full-time roles.
- Quitting Over RTO: Faced with a return to the office mandate, 51% of workers would quit immediately, and 40% would search for remote jobs. Only 9% would return without issue.
- Productivity Perceptions: 39% report being most productive when working remotely, compared to just 25% who feel most productive on-site.
- Mental Health Matters: 68% of employees say flexible work options improve their mental health, with 36% favoring fully remote and 32% preferring hybrid work.
- Power and Trust: Half of workers (50%) see RTO mandates as a way for employers to exert control, while 37% attribute them to a lack of trust in remote work.

Workers offered several theories for why employers are insisting on RTO policies:

The Impact of Work Location on Productivity and Creativity
The survey reveals significant insights into how work environments affect productivity and mental well-being.
- 54% find remote/hybrid collaboration more effective than in-office.
- 73% of workers find they are most productive outside a traditional office setting, with 39% thriving in a fully remote environment and 34% in a hybrid setup.
- 75% report being more creative working remotely.
RTO's Ripple Effects on Home Life:
The return-to-office trend is not just impacting workplaces—it's also creating challenges at home. Among those whose partners returned to the office:
- 40% reported taking on more responsibilities at home due to their partner's absence.
- 36% faced challenges managing childcare or eldercare, signaling the broader implications of RTO policies on families.
- 40% report increased responsibilities at home.
- 29% experience increased relationship stress.
In addition, 68% of workers say flexible work arrangements support their mental health, with 36% favoring fully remote work and 32% preferring a hybrid setup.
"While Trump's orders are likely to embolden more companies to mandate RTO, the survey paints a clear picture: workers value flexibility and remote work options now more than ever," said Jasmine Escalera, career expert at MyPerfectResume. "The traditional 9-to-5 office culture seems increasingly at odds with employee needs for work-life balance, mental health and productivity."
