Tuesday Musical Club Presents its 2019-2020 Artist Series - "Music on Tuesdays"
The Tuesday Musical Club's Artist Series has offered classical music concerts showcasing world-class musicians since 1923, making it one of the oldest continuous musical series sponsored by women in the U.S. During the past 96+ seasons of the Artist Series, other pre-eminent artists such as Leonard Rose, Josef and Rosina Lhévinne, Angelika Kirchschlager, Arcadi Volodos, Chanticleer, The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, Joshua Bell, Nathan Gunn, Stephen Hough and Lawrence Brownlee have performed.
SAN ANTONIO, July 31, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Just 65 years after the fall of the Alamo—when the population of San Antonio was just 53,000—the Tuesday Musical Club (TMC) was founded in 1901 in San Antonio by Anna Hertzberg, a graduate of the New York Conservatory of Music, when she found herself far from the cultured arts of New York City. She and five other women joined together for the purpose of performing and discussing classical music and founded the Tuesday Musical Club; it now holds the distinction of being the oldest music club for women in Texas.
Just two year later, the club's first Musical Teas occurred in 1923 and evolved—without interruption—into its Artist Series concerts featuring world-class artists. It is one of the oldest continuous musical series sponsored by women in the United States.
The 2019-2020 TMC Artist Series schedule is:
October 8, 2019, 2 p.m. – Hermès Quartet - Omer Bouchez and Elise Liu, violins; Yung-Hsin Lou Chang, viola; Christine J. Lee, cello - Sponsored by the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts.
The Washington Post writes the Hermès Quartet "will likely take its place among the top quartets of our time." Its flourishing career has taken it to US, Japan, Argentina, Europe and the United Arab Emirates. Winner of the 2012 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, first and special "Coup de Coeur Breguet" prizes at Geneva International Music Competition and first prizes in European YCA Artists Auditions in Germany, the quartet made acclaimed debuts at YCA Series at Carnegie's Zankel Hall and Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater.
November 12, 2019, 2 p.m. – Alessio Bax, Piano (with marketing support from WestEast Design Group and Appraisals & Estate Sales by June Hayes). Alessio Bax is "among the most remarkable young pianists now before the public" (Gramophone). Catapulting to prominence with First Prize wins at the Leeds and Hamamatsu International Piano Competitions, Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award and Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award, he has performed with 100-plus orchestras on four continents as recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist. Alessio Bax: Scriabin & Mussorgsky CD was named "Recording of the Month…and quite possibly my recording of the year" by MusicWeb International.
February 4, 2020 – 2 p.m. - Rafael Moras, Tenor - Sponsored in part by the Mattie-Jennie Trust.
An alumnus of University of Texas-San Antonio and LA Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program and Santa Fe Opera's Apprentice Program for Singers, Rafael Moras is two-time recipient of Santa Fe Opera's Richard Tucker Fund Award; Grand Finalist of Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions; and finalist twice in Houston Grand Opera's Eleanor McCollum Competition. Opera News said he "escaped all of the tempting tenorial clichés to create a fully fleshed-out characterization. His singing remained warm and ingratiating, from low note to high, from first scene to last."
March 24, 2020 - 7:30 p.m. – Damin Spritzer, Organ - Sponsored by Trinity University and Elaine & John Ehlers in memory of Madalyn Fallis – Venue: Margarite B. Parker Chapel, Trinity University
A frequent guest on the nationally-syndicated "Pipedreams®" broadcast, Damin Spritzer, PhD, is a full-time Assistant Professor of Organ at the American Organ Institute at University of Oklahoma. American Record Guide says about one of her many CDs: "Spritzer is to be commended for her commitment and dedication to this music. She gives spirited and vigorous performances on the magnificent 1880 Cavaillé-Coll organ in Orléans, France." She serves as Artist-in-Residence for Cathedral Arts for Cathedral Church of Saint Matthew in Dallas.
All Artist Series concerts last 90 minutes to two hours with a short intermission, and occur on Tuesdays. All concerts (except the March 24 concert) occur at 2 p.m. in Laurel Heights United Methodist Church, 227 W. Woodlawn Avenue. The March 24 concert occurs at 7:30 p.m. in the Margarite B. Parker Chapel, Trinity University.
Handicapped seating is available; there is free parking. Seating is first come-first served. Students are free at all concerts with proper ID.
Full season tickets (four tickets) can be purchased for $75. Tickets can be used at ANY concert, in ANY combination, for maximum flexibility and season enjoyment.
Single tickets for each performance are $25 each and can be purchased on the TMC website or at the door, approximately half an hour before each concert. Discounted group tickets are also available.
"One of TMC's laudable goals is the encouragement and nurture of the musical talent of students," says Anna C. Armstrong, MD, Chair for the Artist Series. "Today's classical music students are its tomorrow and future, so TMC offers free admission to the luminous Artists Series concerts. That goal is what inspired me to serve as chairman."
Tuesday Musical Club also fosters the enjoyment of classical music to the youth of the San Antonio community through its age-appropriate Junior Tuesday Musical Club and Young Artists Competitions. Each spring since 1956, the Tuesday Musical Club holds a Young Artists Competition for serious students of music, age 18-26, who reside or study in Texas. The competition is held for piano, voice and strings in rotating years. The Junior Tuesday Musical Club was established in 1924 to give young people in grades 1-12 an appreciation of the beauty of music. The club's monthly meetings encourage the performance of fine repertoire, excellence in musical performance and friendship among young musicians. The Junior TMC Competition, held on the last Saturday in February at the TMC Clubhouse, is open to the public.
TMC's exclusively female membership includes some of San Antonio's best musicians, teachers and classical aficionados, who all keep up with the international music scene. "The Tuesday Musical Club is one of the fine institutions—created by and for ladies—that survived the suffrage movement, two World Wars, the tumult of the late 20th century and the vicissitudes of the early 21st to maintain its position as one of the city's foremost presenters of classical music."
