uBiome Appoints Dr. Corrie Moreau, PhD, Director of the Integrative Research Center at the Field Museum of Natural History, to its Scientific Advisory Board
The leader in microbial genomics appoints pioneer of research in microbiology, evolution, and genomics to its board of scientific advisors.
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- uBiome, the leader in microbial genomics, announces the addition of Dr. Corrie Moreau, PhD, Robert A. Pritzker Director of the Integrative Research Center and Associate Curator at the Field Museum of Natural History Department of Science and Education, to its Scientific Advisory Board. Joining the board of leading scientists and doctors from around the world, Dr. Moreau will bring to uBiome expertise in the coevolution of host-associated microbes, particularly ant-associated gut bacteria. The appointment will help uBiome continue its advancement in human microbiome research.
"Not only is Dr. Moreau a brilliant researcher of host-associated microbes, but she also understands the value of citizen-science, an important component of the work we do at uBiome," Dr. Jessica Richman, PhD, co-founder and CEO of uBiome, said. "We are honored to have her on our Scientific Advisory Board."
In 2019, Dr. Moreau will take on the position of Martha N. and John C. Moser Professor of Arthropod Biosystematics and Biodiversity at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She is currently the Robert A. Pritzker Director of the Integrative Research Center and Associate Curator at the Field Museum of Natural History in the Department of Science and Education. She has been a Scientific Affiliate and Lecturer at the University of Chicago on the Committee on Evolutionary Biology since 2008 and was previously a Miller Fellow at the University of California Berkeley in Integrative Biology and Environmental Science, Policy and Management Departments from 2007 to 2008. The Moreau Lab researches the evolutionary history of social insects and their gut-associated microbes and uses that information to better understand the broadscale evolutionary patterns of life. In 2016, she was named a Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences; In 2015, she was named 15 Brilliant Women Bridging the Gender Gap in Science; and in 2014, 10 Women Scientists You Should Follow on Twitter. She has received funding from several federal agencies and foundations. As an advocate for scientific education and outreach, Dr. Moreau founded the Field Museum Women in Science group and seeks to engage students at all educational levels in science.
About joining uBiome's Scientific Advisory Board, Dr. Moreau said, "I am excited to join the uBiome Scientific Advisory Board to interact with an excellent group of scientists who focus on the host-associated microbiome. I am particularly interested to find ways to leverage novel technologies and microbial data to understand the microbiome of socially interacting species, which includes humans to ants. As uBiome is a leader in understanding the role and impact of the human microbiome, I hope to learn from their extensive expertise and bring my own unique perspective from working on an entirely different group of social organisms."
In addition to Dr. Moreau, the uBiome Scientific Advisory Board also includes Dr. Joseph DeRisi (MacArthur Genius and UCSF professor), Dr. Atul Butte (head of the Institute for Computational Health Sciences at UCSF), Dr. Katherine Pollard (Director, Gladstone Institute for Data Science and Biotechnology), Dr. Joel Palefsky (UCSF School of Medicine professor), Dr. George Church (leading geneticist at Harvard University), Dr. Liz Lipski (Academic Director of Nutrition and Integrative Health Programs at Maryland University of Integrative Health), Dr. Elaine Hsiao, PhD (UCLA), and other leading scientists. The company's Medical Advisory Board includes Dr. Alan Green (Society for Participatory Medicine), Dr. Leo Treyzon (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center), Dr. Cynthia Geyer (Medical Director of Canyon Ranch, Lenox), Dr. Robynne Chutkan (Georgetown University Hospital), Michael Docktor (Boston Children's Hospital), Dr. Tiffany Lester (Medical Director of Parsley Health in San Francisco), Dr. Joel Kahn (Founder of of the Kahn Center for Cardiac Longevity), as well as other accomplished clinicians.
