UN Foundation Announces Press Fellowship to Uganda to Focus on Women’s Health and Rights
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) June 13, 2016 -- The United Nations Foundation today announced a fellowship for a select group of U.S.-based journalists focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights in Uganda during the first week of August 2016.
In close coordination with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and other UN agencies, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), government ministries and other partners with in-country expertise, the fellowship will offer unparalleled opportunities to learn directly from community health workers, reproductive health experts, and government officials. Participating journalists will observe family planning service delivery, youth-related programming, and maternal health initiatives, and hear personal stories directly from girls, women and their families.
“More than three-quarters of Uganda’s population is under the age of 30. Empowering each of these young people with access to access to quality sexual and reproductive health services is more important than ever. While contraceptive use in Uganda has risen from 11% to 30% in the last twenty years, there is still a large unmet need for quality family planning information and services. This fellowship will give journalists the opportunity to see the complexities of these challenges first-hand, and also learn about progress made and opportunities for the future,” said Seema Jalan, Senior Director of the UN Foundation’s Universal Access Project.
This fellowship is intended for U.S.-based journalists who do not have regular access to key experts in Uganda, but are interested in sexual and reproductive health and rights globally, gender equality, international development, and the United Nations.
