CHICAGO, Feb. 07, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- WHAT: UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is hosting the 5th annual Chicago Mayor's Luncheon today, an event fostering the valuable partnership between Mayor Emanuel and UNCF throughout his tenure. Benefitting historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), close to 300 business, civic and community leaders are expected to come together to equip students of color with the resources necessary to transition into college and ultimately the workforce. The Star Scholarship has helped thousands of hardworking Chicago students access a college education no matter their background or financial needs.
"Mayor Emanuel's unwavering support has been invaluable. He has raised the bar amongst his constituents to invest in a quality education for our youth, said Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO UNCF. "As we celebrate his last luncheon as mayor of Chicago, we also applaud his work on behalf of Chicago students, and HBCUs."
The new Star Scholarship partnership agreements include:
- Florida Memorial University will offer guaranteed admission to all Star Scholars providing they meet admission requirements and will provide $8,000 in scholarships to each student admitted.
- Stillman College will emphasize teacher education and will offer 10 Star Scholars who are interested in pursuing a degree in the field of education a $4,000 annual scholarship and up to $500 per year for online courses.
