PHILADELPHIA, March 28, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- During an extraordinary night, UNCF (United Negro College Fund) locally celebrated its 75th anniversary March 16 at its Philadelphia UNCF Mayor's Masked Ball and raised more than $760,000 for deserving students and historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Hosted by the honorable Mayor James Kenney, UNCF presented Robert Bogle, president and CEO, Philadelphia Tribune, with a 2019 Masked Award. Comcast Corporation and Wells Fargo also received awards for years-long support of UNCF during the program.
More than 700 guests were in attendance, including event co-chairs Stephanie Mays Boyd, vice president of sales and marketing, Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority; Ric Harris, president and general manager, NBC10/Telemundo62; Alycia Horn, vice president and deputy general counsel, Comcast Cable; Joe H. Tucker, Jr., founder and managing partner, Tucker Law Group; HBCU presidents Dr. Brenda Allen, Lincoln University, and Aaron A. Walton, Cheney University; and Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO, UNCF.
"There are millions of Americans who, over 75 years, have invested in UNCF and better futures for our students, and through that success, for all of us," said Lomax. "Tonight, we raised the resources our HBCUs need to do their invaluable work. Tonight, we fund scholarships that narrow the gap between college costs and family resources. And together, we change the narrative of our HBCUs, which help strengthen and elevate a new generation of young, black and gifted students."
Independence Blue Cross and Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church served as Marquis event sponsors. "We applaud our sponsors for investing their time and resources on behalf of our member HBCUs and their students," said Greg Lyles, area development director, UNCF.
During the past 75 years, UNCF has helped nearly half a million students earn college degrees. Benefitting HBCUs and students of color, events like the Philadelphia Mayor's Masked Ball helped UNCF garner the resources to provide more than $3.4 million in scholarships last year to local students.
