WASHINGTON, May 28, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On May 31st at 12:00 PM ET, the U.S. Navy Memorial will host a Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony at the Lone Sailor statue on the Navy Memorial Plaza in the heart of Washington D.C. to remember the brave Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and Merchant Mariners who sacrificed their lives in the service of their country.
With the COVID-19 vaccine now readily available around the country, and the recent lifting of restrictions in the District of Columbia, members of the public are invited to attend this momentous ceremony in person. "This has been a long time coming," said Rear Admiral Frank Thorp, President and CEO of the Navy Memorial. "With vaccination rates on the rise and in conformance with Washington, DC, guidelines, we are grateful to have the chance to share the Memorial Day wreath laying with an in-person ceremony."
At the start of the pandemic, the Navy Memorial began producing commemorative ceremonies virtually, so that those who were not able to participate in person could still share in the experience from the safety of their homes. "It is fitting that our first live event is recognizing the ultimate sacrifice of those brave men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom," said Admiral Thorp. "It also gives us an opportunity to remember the many Americans, civilians and veterans alike, who lost their lives to COVID-19." The event will also be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend the ceremony in person.
