United Methodist Homes to Celebrate Their 19th Annual Walk on September 8
Ocean Grove, NJ (PRWEB) August 17, 2013 -- On September 8 people will gather in Ocean Grove for the 19th annual Nancy Gilbert Rhodes Walk for All Ages with one purpose—to raise proceeds for the Homes’ Fellowship Fund. Walk registration begins at 12 noon at Francis Asbury Manor, 70 Stockton Avenue, Ocean Grove. Every walker will receive a t-shirt at registration. At 1 p.m. the walk begins.
People can conveniently and easily register to walk, sponsor a participant, sponsor the event and donate online at http://www.umhfoundation.org. Participants are encouraged to form church and corporate teams, as well as teams of individuals. The total fundraising goal for this year is $100,000. The Grand Marshal Partner is Hawks & Company of Deptford, New Jersey. Neptune Township Mayor Eric Houghtaling; Martin A. Rosica, president of Hawks & Company; and Lawrence Carlson, president and CEO of United Methodist Homes will lead walkers as the Grand Marshals.
For over 106 years the Homes has maintained residents who have outlived their financial resources. The Fellowship Fund pays for expenses not covered by health insurance and other sources. Typically, these include rent, meals, housekeeping, medical supplies, prescriptions, etc. Many participants, who have personally contributed and/or raised support from others, feel motivated to do so because of the care given to a grandfather, mother or other family member.
After walking through the town and returning to Francis Asbury, walkers will enjoy a complimentary lunch, intergenerational fellowship, youth activities and entertainment. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Last year, Lawrence Carlson presented the traveling trophy to the top adult fundraising team, The Shores at Wesley Manor, led by Nancy Gilbert Rhodes, which raised almost $12,000. The trophy will be awarded once again.
Nancy Gilbert Rhodes reflects, “Just seeing what can happen if you just ask and receive for the Fellowship Fund continues to amaze me. I don’t know of any other place that upholds residents like the Homes does. This is my motivation.”
The September 8 walk coincides with National Grandparents Day, which honors grandparents. The day directly relates to the Homes’ mission to seniors and the intergeneration focus of the walk. Participants may walk or donate in honor or in memory of a grandparent. The official flower of the U.S. National Grandparents Day is the forget-me-not.
