CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Aug. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Noodle Partners, the nation's fastest-growing Online Program Management firm, today announced a partnership to launch a fully online version of the University of Virginia (UVA) Data Science Institute's popular Master of Science in Data Science. The inaugural online cohort will start in the summer of 2019.
"We are excited to collaborate with Noodle Partners to expand access to our MS in Data Science to meet growing demand," said Dr. Phil Bourne, director of the UVA Data Science Institute (DSI). "Interest in this program on a global scale is phenomenal; taking it online will allow the DSI to expand our ability to educate the next wave of leading data scientists by preparing them with best-in-class education and real-world experience working with industry partners for a stunningly strong labor market."
Indeed, a recent Bloomberg article called data science "America's hottest job" and leading media outlets and companies, including Forbes, Glassdoor, and IBM, consistently rank data science as one of the fastest-growing fields.
"Not only are opportunities for exceptional data scientists exponentially growing," Bourne said, "but data science is being increasingly applied across diverse industries, in government, and in academia. We have researchers using machine learning to address childhood disease in developing countries, applying deep learning to understand religious violence, and building neural networks to enhance cybersecurity at global financial institutions. There is truly no limit to the areas skilled data scientists can create an impact."
The existing residential MS in Data Science attracts many times the number of applicants it can currently serve; offering the program online as well will provide more students the opportunity to take part in an exceptional data science program at a world-renowned university. In addition to mirroring the existing curriculum and being taught by UVA faculty, the online version will have three intakes/year compared to the residential program's summer-only start. Students in both programs will take courses such as Machine Learning, Data Mining, Statistical Computing for Data Science, and Data Science Ethics, and all complete a capstone project.
"We are excited to welcome the University of Virginia's Data Science Institute to the Noodle Partners family," notes Noodle CEO John Katzman. "The combination of academic excellence, UVA's reputation, and increased access virtually guarantees the success of the online MS in Data Science, and we look forward to reaching new audiences."
