Boston is a city rich in history, and it is known across the country as the origin location of numerous breaking news stories. Throughout recent years however, the local news industry has been suffering. Over 1,800 local newspapers have shut down or merged since 2014 in America alone. It is with this backdrop that Impressions Holdings – historically associated with the production of online industry magazines – makes its foray into the world of local news with Up To Boston.

Impressions made its name through digital content production streamlining, eventually expanding to become the #20 fastest growing software company of 2017 (Inc. 5000). Its content creation software became known as Impress3 Media, an application which aids writers, editors and other content creators as they seek to produce the most interesting articles, videos, and podcasts for their respective users.

At Impress3, the team crafted a new mission statement, “Breathe life into the ailing local news industry,” and with the launch of Up To Boston, they have already found success.

In just a few short months, Up To Boston has reached hundreds of thousands of readers by accessing the Impress3 software, and its ability to locate breaking news before even major news outlets catch wind of the story. In one instance, Up To Boston posted an article about an alleged bomb scare at the offices of the Boston Globe nearly a day before organizations like CNN and Fox News picked up the story.

According to Up To Boston’s editors and staff, the software employed by Impress3 is capable of detecting potential stories through automated scans of social media, other news outlets, and additional inputs. It then works to aid editors in fact checking by finding multiple sources and potential leads with whom editors can follow-up.

Impress3 is in the beginning phases of full-implementation of this software in news, eyeing bi-coastal publications in the near future.
