KENOSHA, Wis., Dec. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Kenall Manufacturing supplies lighting for some of the most challenging projects in the world, including biosafety level 3-4 cleanrooms, intricately designed surgical suites and transportation tunnels. One such project, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) in Virginia, was recently featured in Tunnel Business magazine.
A 17.6-mile (28.3 km) bridge-tunnel crossing connecting Northampton County, Virginia on the eastern shore, with the communities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth on Virginia's western shore, the CBBT is the world's second-largest bridge-tunnel complex. Kenall was intricately involved in relamping the existing tunnel, and the Tunnel Business feature article shares details of some of the many challenges faced in updating the lighting in the underwater structure, as well as the innovative solutions devised by Kenall engineers.
The new LuxTran™ fixtures by Kenall will save CBBT $500,00 per year in maintenance costs and energy consumption, as well as reduced traffic congestion. Michael Crist, the Deputy Director of Infrastructure for the CBBT, emphasized the important of these savings. "Prior to installing LED lights, we had a one-week per-month lighting detail, requiring a tunnel lane closure, with three to four operations personnel, and three or four maintenance personnel, to replace light bulbs. Eliminating this detail is a huge cost savings and a big safety improvement," he said.
Kenall's Transportation Sales Manager, Michael Maltezos, MEIS, added, "These particular LuxTran luminaires were redesigned specifically for the CBBT project because nothing like them existed in the market – not just at Kenall, but anywhere. The Tunnel Business article illustrates the significance of what we were able to do, and the incredible teamwork that resulted in the solution."
