Utah State Bar Cancels Spring Convention Over COVID-19 Concerns
The Utah State Bar has cancelled its annual spring convention, scheduled to take place in St. George March 12-14 based on concerns about coronavirus and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control.
SALT LAKE CITY, March 12, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The convention is part of a Bar program that provides continuing legal education for attorneys as part of their licensing requirements.
"In light of the recent advice of the CDC in discouraging gatherings of large groups to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Bar Commission has reluctantly decided that the Spring Convention in St. George should be cancelled," Bar President Herm Olsen and Committee Co-Chair Abby Dizon-Maughan wrote in letter to Bar members.
The Utah Judicial Council, which generally holds its meetings in conjunction with the Bar's convention, cancelled its meetings earlier in the week.
The event, which has been held in St. George every spring for more than 30 years, is the second-largest yearly gathering of Utah State Bar members. More than 400 attorneys were registered to attend this year.
"The Utah State Bar's concern for the health and wellbeing of our members and their families is of great importance," Olsen and Dizon-Maughan said. "We feel that our concern for you should prevail in light of today's rapidly changed circumstances."
